Claiming the Lost Time PDF Print E-mail
Written by Gary Rogoff

ImageAnyone who knows me realizes I hate to wait. I have learned over the years, however, that the world just won't stop and revolve around me, no matter how much I ask it to! Instead, I have found several techniques for claiming back time that is wasted waiting for doctors, waiting on hold, waiting for clients/bosses, waiting for downloads, etc. Here are a few, (some suggested by my wife, if you can guess which ones).

Make a quick phone call.
Plan your day, week, or month.
Train your brain - memorize something.
Clean out your briefcase.
Organize your wallet (or purse).
Write your "To do" or "To call" list.
Complete paperwork.
Listen to an informational tape.
Read a magazine article carried for this occasion.
Write a quick note.
Straighten up your work area.
Do relaxation exercises.

· While waiting for a download or for your computer to respond, pay a bill or two or jot a thank you note.
· While having a low-key phone conversation with your spouse, accomplish rote tasks like sorting the mail, looking over homework, stamping envelopes.
· While watching your favorite TV program, instead of just being idle, fold and sort laundry, exercise, or straighten up the room.

You will be amazed at how much gets accomplished if you take maximum advantage of these short periods of time. They add up quickly - if you effectively utilize just 10 more minutes a workday, that equals one work week a year!
