When WWI broke out, the War Ministry of London dispatched this message to one of its more inaccessible British outposts in Africa: "War declared! Arrest all enemy aliens in your district." The War Ministry received this prompt reply: "Have arrested ten Germans, six Belgians, four Frenchmen, two Italians, three Australians and an American. Please advise immediately who we are at war with."

I could almost hear the whine in my voice when I was at lunch with my mentor: "But I'm a writer! I'm no good at cold calling!" My mentor looked at me and said, "So that's it? That's your Sacred Cow? Well, Barbara, Sacred Cows make the best burgers!"
